In order to build up an effectively cooperative relationship with the key universities and research institutes in China and the Asia-Pacific region, Bell Labs Research China has established several joint labs with Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University and Chinese Academy of Science. In addition, BLRC signed joint funding agreement with National Science Foundation of China. BLRC is seeking more opportunities to collaborate with China universities and research institutes.

In the recent years, he has undertaken several national research projects and, from 1999.3 to 2000.4, he worked at Bell Labs in U.S. as a visiting scientist. He has published more than 70 papers.

Director of the Joint Lab: Professor Hanyi Zhang
Professor Zhang has been with the Department of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University since 1965. For the past ten years, he joined and headed more than ten state projects including "External-cavity tunable semiconductor laser", "WDM all optical demonstration network", "Fundamental research of WDM all optical network", "OXC facility of CAINONET", "Integrated OADM for WDM all optical network", etc. He has won eight awards from China for his contributions in scientific research, and published more than 100 papers. He is the Editor of the Chinese Journal of Laser (English edition) and the Editor of the Journal of Infrared and Laser Engineering. He is the Vice Secretary General of the Chinese Optical Society.
Professor Bingkun Zhou
Professor Zhou is a member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, vice-president of the Chinese Optical Society, fellow of OSA. He has been engaged in laser and optoelectronics research for a long time. His interests include laser physics and devices, semiconductor laser and applications, semiconductor laser pumped solid-state laser, doped fiber amplifiers and lasers, high-speed optical fiber communications and optical switching. He has got scientific achievements in the areas of "Semiconductor laser pumped solid state laser", "Fiber ring cavity and their application", DWDM optical fiber communications and eight national awards. He is the author and co-author of over 100 papers and one book: "Laser Principle", which won the state excellent prize.
Professor Chongcheng Fan
During 1989-1991, Professor Fan was a visiting research scientist at Rutgers University, New Jersey. Now he is the Academic Committee Chair of the Electronics Engineering Department and a member of the International Academic Exchange Committee of the University. His research interest includes DWDM systems, optical fiber nonlinearity, dispersion management and optimization, system modeling software package, etc. He led and participated in many research projects on the topics mentioned above. He has more than 70 published papers and presentations, and is the co-author of a graduate-level textbook on Guided-Wave Optics.
Professor Yili Guo
Professor Guo had headed many projects on optoelectronics and nonlinear photonics. His current interest includes DWDM optical networks and intelligent data networks, OXC, OADM and the optical nonlinearities in the networks. He was a visiting research scientist at Tokyo Institute of Technology (1987), University College London (1990-1991), and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (1995). Professor Guo has published over 100 papers in professional journals and is the coauthor of the books ^Optoelectronics and Lightwave Technology ̄ (John Wiley, 1992), ^Nonlinear Photonics ̄ (Springer-Verlag and CUHK Press, 2002). He received a State Award of Advanced Science and Technology (Second Grade) from the State Science and Technology Commission of China for his contributions on the wide-band tunable nonlinear high power laser.
Professor Yanhe Li
Professor Li is Vice Dean of Information School, Tsinghua University and a senior member of Electronics Society of China. His research interest includes semiconductor opto-electronics, integrated opto-electronics, high-speed fiber transmission systems and WDM optical networks. He was a visiting scholar at University California, Irvine (1994-1996). He either participated in or headed many research projects sponsored by the National 863 Program and the National Natural Science Foundation. He won two awards from the State Education Ministry and has more than 40 papers and presentations published.
Professor Xiaoping Zheng
Professor Zheng got his PhD degree and is a professor in the Department of Electronics Engineering, Tsinghua University. He has taken part in 863 high technology grand projects, grand projects funded by National Natural Science, 973 Natural Key Basis Research and Development Plan, and so on. He is supported by the Main Teacher Plan of National Education Committee. His principal research areas include: optical network element technology and system technology. He led the project of automatic switched optical network (ASON) sponsored by the National 863 Program. |

Director of the Joint Lab: Professor Zhisheng Niu
Prof. Niu graduated from Northern Jiaotong University, Beijing, China, in 1985, and got his M.E. and D.E. degrees from Toyohashi University of Technology, Toyohashi, Japan, in 1989 and 1992, respectively. After two-year research at Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd, he joined Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 1994, where he is now a full professor at the Department of Electronic Engineering. His current research interests include queuing and teletraffic theory, performance evaluation of high-speed broadband information networks, and wireless ATM/IP networks. He has published more than 60 journal and conference papers so far and been serving as the technical program committee members of 9 international conferences.
Prof. Niu is a senior member of the IEEE and the Vice Chair of Technical Activity Committee of Asia-Pacific Board of IEEE Communication Society, a senior member of the Chinese Institute of Electronics (CIE), a member of Institute of Electronics, Information, and Communication Engineers (IEICE), and a member of the Chinese Society of Operation Research. He received the PAACS Friendship Award from the IEICE of Japan in 1991 and the Best Paper Award (1st prize) from the 6th Chinese Youth Conference on Communication Technology in 1999. He also received the Japanese Government Research Awards for Foreign Specialists from Science and Technology Agency (STA) of Japan and the Award for the Telecommunications Advancement Research Fellowship from Telecommunication Advancement Organization (TAO) of Japan in 1995.
Professor Zhixing Yang
Prof. Yang graduated from Tsinghua University in 1970. He is now a full professor at the Department of Electronic Engineering of Tsinghua University, deputy director of State Key Laboratory on Microwave and Digital Communication, deputy director of the Research Institute of Communication and Microwave. His major interests are in the areas of digital microwave communication, ultra-speed optical fiber communication, remote sensor ground receiving, and hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) access systems. |
