Bell Labs Research China (BLRC) announced the launching of
its Postdoctoral Program as the celebration of the 4th
anniversary.
Presided by Dr. Dawei Huang, Director of BLRC, the opening
ceremony of the postdoctoral program held on Apr.27, 2004 at
Bell Labs Research China. Ms. Sujing Teng, Section Chief of
Beijing Personnel Bureau; Ms. Jian Wang, vice director of
Tsinghua Univ. Personnel Section; Prof. Chuang Lin, Department
Head of Computer Science, Tsinghua Univ.; Prof. Hanyi Zhang,
Prof. Zhisheng Niu, from Electric Engineering Dept. of
Tsinghua Univ., Ms. Jin Wang of Peking Univ. Ms. Fang Deng
from Tsinghua Univ. presented at the ceremony.
The invited guests congratulated BLRC for having the
postdoctoral program launched, and discussed about the
experience on nurturing talents, and the work on postdoctoral
program. They hoped that the collaboration between BLRC and
the universities would be further strengthened and developed.
They would provide full support to BLRC on research and
postdoctoral program.
Dr. Wim Sweldens, Vice President of Bell Labs Research, has
made a keynote address at the ceremony. He said the launching
of postdoctoral program would further enhance the relationship
and cooperation between the Chinese government, Chinese
leading universities and BLRC. BLRC is extremely important to
the company while china market became critical of Lucent. BLRC
would work close together with the government, universities,
and chinese service providers, to bring new innovations to
market!
Dr. Dawei Huang, at the closing remark, reviewed the
research activities of BLRC in the past four years, including
the research areas of Wireless, Optical network, Next
Generation Internet, Network Protocol and software system etc.
He also recalled the cooperation between BRLC and the Chinese
universities and NSFC since the founding of BLRC. He expressed
BLRC's will of continuously supporting Chinese government to
nurture talents and advance technologies and hoped that BLRC
and Chinese Universities could work closely on the
postdoctoral program in the future. He said that BLRC was
concentrating on application researches with breakthrough
concepts. This mission coincides the Lucent¡¯s slogan ¡°in
China, for China, with China¡±. An example is the applications
for Olympic 2008 in Beijing.
The postdoctoral system in China focuses on the nurture of
talents and the strengthening of the cooperation between
industry and academia to enhance the scientific and
technological development. When BLRC's Postdoctoral Program
was approved by the Chinese government in late 2003, BLRC
became the second research org of foreign industry in China
that can setup the postdoctoral program. In accordance with
the Chinese Post Doctor System, Bell Labs Research China will
offer more opportunities for the talents in China through the
postdoctoral projects of breakthrough areas. It will
contribute to the development of technology and will enhance
the cooperation between Lucent, Bell Labs and the Chinese
government and universities.
By now, BLRC's jointly funded projects with NSFC and its
six joint research labs with Tsinghua University, Peking
University, CAS and Fudan University have achieved many
progresses in the areas of optical networking, Internet
technologies, wireless communications, software and network
systems design and analysis, computer science and applied
mathematics.

Dear representatives from the Chinese government,
Dear representatives from the Chinese leading universities,
Dear colleagues from Bell Lab Research China,
I would like to thank you very much for attending this
celebration, and really special thanks to the Chinese
government for allowing the opening of the Bell Labs doctoral
program. I also would like to apologize that I couldn¡¯t
address here in Chinese. I will try by my next visit to learn
a few Chinese word to address.
This is a very important moment in the history of Bell Lab
research in China. We established the Bell Lab China more than
4 years ago because of the importance for China as a market
for Lucent technologies, and also because of the importance of
China as an area for Lucent company's development. We felt, it
is also import to also establish a world-leading research and
innovation center right here in Beijing.
This partnership and post-doctoral program will allow us to
continue the partnership between universities, government and
Bell Lab innovations as well as lucent technologies. And the
partnership between fundamental research as well as industrial
research and applications and new products is really the
foundation of Bell Labs over the entire history, and is also
the foundation of Bell Lab research China.
So going forward, Lucent technology as a company, is
focusing on growing its business, and growing business in
China market is very important. First of all, China as a
market is very important to our company, as well as new
innovations and technologies growing from universities¡¯
partnership with Bell Lab. This is important for allowing
Lucent's growth. So one of the critical parts of our company
business is going to develop the Bell Lab Research China. We
look forward to continuing the collaboration with government,
with universities, with Chinese service providers.
